Where Learning Happens Through the Hands: Our Montessori Lab
Walk into the Montessori Lab at Froebel Cambridge Preschool, and the first thing you'll notice is how busy and how quiet it is. Children are concentrating, picking up wooden materials, tracing letters on sandpaper, pouring beads, and matching shapes, all on their own. This is exactly what Maria Montessori meant when she said the hand is the instrument of the mind.
Our Montessori Lab is a carefully prepared space, separate from the regular classroom, where children spend dedicated time each week working with authentic Montessori materials. It is here that abstract ideas, numbers, sounds, weights, sizes, and language become physical, touchable, and unforgettable. As one of the best Montessori-inspired preschools in India, we believe children learn faster, remember longer, and enjoy more when they are allowed to do rather than just listen.
The Four Areas of Our Montessori Lab
The Lab is organised into four traditional Montessori areas, each focused on a specific kind of development. Children rotate through them at their own pace, choosing the material that interests them on a given day.
Why a Dedicated Montessori & STEM Lab Makes a Difference
Authentic Materials, Trained Educators, Real Learning
-
1 A dedicated space designed for focused, self-directed work, not just decoration.
-
2 Authentic, child-sized Montessori materials sourced and maintained with care.
-
3 Educators trained in Montessori-inspired methods and child observation.
-
4 Mixed-age sessions where younger children learn from older ones, naturally.
What Children Do in the Lab?
Each area of the Montessori Lab supports a specific kind of skill. Children move between them as their curiosity leads.
-
Practical Life
Pouring, spooning, buttoning, folding cloth, polishing, these everyday tasks build concentration, coordination, and independence. Children learn to care for themselves and their environment.
-
Sensorial Materials
The famous pink tower, brown stairs, colour tablets, and sound cylinders sharpen each of the senses. Children learn to compare, order, and classify long before they can explain why.
-
Language Area
Sandpaper letters, movable alphabets, picture-word cards, and storytelling baskets introduce children to letter sounds, word formation, and reading, through their fingertips first, then their voice.
-
Numeracy & Math
Number rods, golden bead chains, spindle boxes, and counting frames help children feel what numbers actually mean before writing them. Quantity becomes real, not abstract.
-
Cultural & Nature Studies
Globes, maps, life cycle puzzles, and nature trays introduce children to the wider world, animals, continents, seasons, and how things grow. Curiosity becomes a lifelong habit.
Why Montessori-Inspired Learning Works
The Montessori Lab is not about doing things differently for the sake of it. There is real reasoning behind every material, every shelf, and every routine.
- Self-directed work builds concentration and independence
- Hands-on materials make abstract ideas easy to understand
- Mixed-age sessions encourage natural learning between peers
- Mistake-friendly design lets children learn at their own pace, without judgement
Calm, prepared environment helps even active children settle and focus
Trained, Observant Educators
A Montessori Lab is only as good as the educator running it. Our teachers are trained in Montessori-inspired methods and child observation. They guide gently, step in only when needed, and let children discover the joy of figuring things out on their own.
Open to All Our Programs
Children from our Pre-Nursery, Nursery, LKG, and UKG programs visit the Montessori Lab during the week. It complements our main curriculum and gives every child consistent exposure to hands-on, sensorial learning, not just those in a "Montessori track."
The Lab Children Don't Want to Leave
Parents often hear it first: "When can I go back to the activity room?" The Montessori Lab quickly becomes the favourite part of the week for many children at Froebel Cambridge. That kind of excitement about learning is exactly what early education should feel like.
Frequently Asked Questions
A Montessori Lab is a dedicated activity room stocked with authentic, hands-on Montessori materials. We have one because children learn faster, deeper, and more joyfully when they can touch and explore concepts rather than just hear about them.
We are a Montessori-inspired Cambridge preschool. Our curriculum blends the structured advantages of a modern preschool with the hands-on, child-led principles of the Montessori method, the best of both approaches.
All children from Pre-Nursery to UKG visit the lab regularly. Activities are matched to age, younger children focus on sensorial and practical life materials, older children move into language, math, and cultural areas.
Not at all. Our educators handle everything in the Lab. Parents simply notice the changes at home, better concentration, more independence in daily tasks, and a curious, confident child.
In a regular preschool, the teacher leads most activities. In a Montessori-inspired setting, children choose materials that interest them, work at their own pace, and learn through doing. The teacher observes and guides rather than instructing constantly.
